The Academy is a co-educational, independent day school located in East Machias, Maine. The school has been serving the needs of students in Washington County for over 200 years. Students from designated communities are able to attend Washington Academy free of charge. The state of Maine pays the Academy for each of these students. The Academy has the right to refuse acceptance of any student. Students from outside these designated communities must pay tuition directly to the school. The school enrolls approximately 300 students in grades 9-12. Each year the school will accept between ten and fifteen international exchange students.

The Academy is located in the city of East Machias, Maine. East Machias is a city with a population of 1,500. East Machias is located in the southeast section of the state of Maine, close to the ocean. This city is a summer resort area for many of New England?s wealthiest families. This area would be considered a rural area. The climate in this area is fairly mild due to East Machias?close proximity to the ocean.

The Academy does not require students to wear official school uniforms, but does require that all students dress in a neat, clean and appropriate manner.

All students attending the Academy will be placed with carefully selected host families in or around East Machias, Maine. A local contact person will be assigned to supervise the student and host family for the duration of the student?s stay in the United States. Students also have a choice to live in a dormitory setting. If students choose a dormitory living environment, there are extra costs that are involved.

Male students attending the Academy are able to participate in the following interscholastic athletics: Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, and Tennis. Female students attending the Academy are able to participate in the following interscholastic athletics: Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Tennis, and Volleyball.
